HONBLUE: Integrating multiple divisions into one workflow
HONBLUE was established in 1967 by Larry Heim Sr., an architect from Palo Alto CA, to provide printing services for the Architectural/Engineering/ Construction (AEC) firms. Today, with over 140 employees, they are the predominant leader in Hawaii, not only for AEC printing, but also for commercial, digital and large-format printing.
Matt Heim, son of founder Larry Heim Sr., brought many innovative and forward-thinking technologies to address unmet needs in Hawaii. Installation of the Indigo E-Print 1000, the print industry’s first digital press, and the first large-format digital printer are good examples of how HONBLUE anticipated the needs of Hawaii’s creative community.

Award-winning magazine, Out of Chaos, has folded.
We had realized a dream with Out of Chaos: To publish a magazine, free of charge and with not advertising, a gift to the graphic and printing industries. We produced 90% fresh content written by dedicated writers. Our articles were a mix of cutting edge color technology, introductions to new and not so new technology, and captivating general interest stories. In the magazine’s short life, published for the first time in 2013, we won awards from the Western Publishing Association, and were finalists for the very coveted Ozzie and Eddie awards from Folio.
But all good things come to an end. Unable to attract enough readers, we can no longer continue.
You will always have access to the downloadable app and web reader version, with its seven issues. We hope you enjoy them.
We thank the dedicated team that made it possible to publish at all: Writers Kevin O’Connor and Danielle Ruderman; Designer LN Vaillencourt, and technical and creative wizard Matt Richmond. We also thank the many industry colleagues who collaborated on these articles.
